Meadows: Colour Stories From The Land
Join me, Melanie Monique Rose to unveil my newest wearable art collection inspired by principles of matriarchy and our relationship and connection to the land and her stories. This is a thirteen piece collection and will debut May 9th, 2pm at 1377 Hamilton Street, Regina SK.
The first collaborator on this project has been the land. The soil, the sun, the water and the wind. Engaging the elements in this body of work has been a way to work in softness in times when things are hard. Working with plants, walking the land, has been medicine for my heart. It is good for me to come to this work and remember the good, to remember joy. The cloth (silk charmeuse) holds the plants - they are held. I like to think they are like how the earth holds us, a blanket of snow upon the earth, or how a loving mother holds us, so does the cloth hold the plants. These plants left their lip stained kisses as a memory of their adoration. This work grounds me, and gives me aliveness as the plants once were - I believe this cloth holds some of that still… that energy. All the places I’ve been, the flowers I watered, the conversations had are all recorded in the cloth. It is a memory map, it traces time, a moment, a place. So much labor, time and presence has been put into these, ‘four metre color stories’. It is a process that I wish to share to find a place to meet this project, this collaboration, this cloth. My hope is to share with you, but also for you to find yourselves in the cloth. Where do you come from? What’s important to you?
This collection started in the spring of 2025 with the conception, planning and growing of gardens in and outside of Regina, Saskatchewan, Treaty 4 Territory. I spent the summer and fall tending to gardens, walking in the ditches and wild spaces, watering, discovering, gathering, pressing, preserving and eco-printing silk charmeuse for a thirteen piece collection to be presented in the spring of 2026. In total I botanically printed with the support of my mother and daughter over fifty-two metres of silk charmeuse in four metre bundles I called, “four metre color stories”. Thirteen bundles in total - distributed to twelve Saskatchewan based designers.
